The battery on an ebike is often one of the most expensive components.  All of the batteries sold by California Ebike are Lithium Ion.  Lithium ion batteries provide an excellent power to weight ratio, but unfortunately degrade over time, even when they are not being used. Environmental factors such as storage at high temperatures may actually degrade battery life more than using the battery normally.

By following these best practices, you can protect your investment and prolong the life of your battery.

1.  Keep your battery at room temperature and avoid "extreme" temperatures whenever possible.

Temperatures over 30°C (86°F) are considered elevated and should be avoided. Obviously if you're riding your bike in the sun on a warm day, it may be impossible to avoid these temperatures.  Whenever possible, park your bike in the shade and store your battery in a cool place when not in use.

2. Minimize the amount of time the battery spends at 100% or 0% charge

Lithium Ion batteries degrade faster when fully charged or fully discharged.  If you do not need 100% of your battery for your next ride, consider only charging to 80% or whatever is suitable. If you do need to charge to 100%, wait to charge until right before you ride, so that the battery is not sitting fully charged for long periods of time. 

3. Avoid fully discharging batteries when possible

It's best to avoid completely discharging your battery.  If you need every last ounce of power for your ride, put your battery on the charger when you get home, and charge it to about 40-60% capacity.  

4.  For long term storage, charge your battery to  about 40%-60% capacity and store in a cool place.

The worst possible combination of factors is storing a fully charged battery in a warm environment.  A partially charged battery stored in a cool place will retain its power for much longer.  

5. Do not store your battery fully discharged

Storing a battery fully discharged may allow the voltage to drop below the minimum levels needed for your charger to work properly.  Once this happens, you may not be able to recharge your battery without special equipment.
