Bafang BBS02 Mid Drive Electric Bike Reference Guide
Overview of the Bafang BBS02
The Bafang BBS02 is an electric bike conversion kit that replaces the crank assembly of a bike with an integrated electric motor. This allows the motor to work with the rider and apply torque through the bicycle’s drive line.
Electric Bike Mid-Drive Benefits
An electric mid-drive has several advantages over the hub-motor design seen in many electric bikes over the last 10 years.
- Electric assist is delivered through the chain driveline allowing the motor to leverage the bike’s existing gearing
- Motor assembly is mounted under the bottom bracket and low to the ground for a lower center of gravity
- Flat tire repair is easier than a wheel hub-motor
Watts / Volts
The BBS02 is available in the following combinations:
- 250 watt / 36 volt
- 350 watt / 36 volt
- 500 watt / 48 volt
- 750 watt / 48 volt
All Bafang kits have the upgraded 3077 controller since June 2015. The prior controller had a serious issue that often lead to failure, which is discussed at length in popular ebike forums. Prospective buyers can be assured that any Bafang kit they purchase from a common well-known vendor will have an upgraded controller.
If the Bafang is purchased from an unknown seller, or an older used mid drive, then the drive would have to be inspected to know for sure.
There are three types of thumb throttles available with the BBS02 kit. This choice depends on personal preference of course, and the Right Twist Throttle is the most common used. But there can be some advantages to choosing a thumb throttle over a twist throttle.
The thumb throttle provides assist increasingly as the lever is pressed away from the rider. This can be preferable if you want to try and limit the amount of electric assist you use. A twist throttle is easier to set a level of assist and maintain it by holding the grip.
